Blue Song Bird Illustration

Here is a drawing I did the other day. I love painting fantastic creatures. Birds feathers remind me of clouds and soft flowy things. So whenever I depict a bird, it never looks like a real bird, but maybe what I think it would feel like.

A Review of Derwent Inktense Pencils

My Daughter bought me a set of 12 Derwent Intense Pencils and a set of 12 Derwent Inktense sticks for Christmas this year. I have to say at first I was skeptical. I had never used watercolor pencils and as she made a little sketch for me,  I was not sure if or how I would use them.

Now that I have used them to create many of my little creations, I feel sure that if you are a watercolor or gouache painter...you will LOVE them. The ink dries quickly, close to instantly after you put water on it. As soon as it dries, it is permanent and will not run or bleed if you add more pencil, water, ink or other mediums. The colors are VIBRANT. I am definitely impressed. As with watercolor, you can achieve every bit of nuance you wish, just practice on controlling color amount. I have been using them on Arches watercolor blocks and I have been very pleased with the results. I am still in the process of practicing with them and learning how to control and blend colors, but I have made some wonderful little artworks with them so far.

The only complaint that I could have of them is that I wish there were more pastel colors in the set. I ended up buying the 72 piece set after using the 12 for just a bit. It is a little pricey at about $117.00 for the 72 pc. set, but well worth it in my opinion.

So now, a couple little pieces I created with Derwent Inktense pencils. Other mediums used in these two were Sakura ink, another one of my favorites.
